Skyler Brind’Amour Helps Quinnipiac Win First-Ever National Championship Title in Men’s Ice Hockey

Imagine sitting down at the dinner table and being able to say you helped secure your college team’s first-ever national championship title. For Skyler Brind’Amour, this is no hypothetical situation. The son of Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, Skyler’s college career recently culminated in a thrilling victory that’s sure to make him the envy of the family—at least for a while.

Skating in his fourth season with Quinnipiac University, Skyler played a key role in leading the Bobcats to a 3-2 overtime win over Minnesota, earning the school its first Division I men’s ice hockey title. As if that weren’t exciting enough, his dad managed to make it to the game despite having coached his own team in Buffalo earlier that day. Talk about fatherly dedication!

But back to Skyler: in the game’s third period, his expert net-front presence contributed to the Bobcats’ tying goal. It was QU all the way from there on out. With less than a minute remaining on a power play, Quinnipiac’s Collin Graf took advantage of some confusion to send a wrist shot past the keeper, knotting the game at 2-2. In overtime, it took only 10 seconds for Jacob Quillan to put away the game-winner, delivering the Bobcats their first national crown.

Skyler’s role in this memorable victory is only the latest accomplishment in his hockey career, which began when he was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Draft. Over the course of four seasons with Quinnipiac, Skyler has played in 144 games, scored 23 goals, and tallied 53 assists for a total of 76 points. In his most recent season, he managed an impressive 14 goals and 32 points with a plus-23 rating in 40 games—all alongside that shiny new national title.

While the Brind’Amour family’s hockey legacy is already impressive, Skyler’s championship victory adds another incredible accomplishment to their storied history. It’s safe to say that the family dinner conversations just got a lot more interesting.
