China conducts military exercises in response to Taiwan-US meeting

Well, folks, grab your popcorn because China’s throwing a fit again. This time, they’ve got their knickers in a twist over President Tsai Ing-wen’s recent meeting with the speaker of the US House of Representatives. So, in typical tantrum-throwing style, China’s sent 71 of its military aircraft buzzing around Taiwan’s airspace to make their displeasure known. Way to keep it cool, China!

But hey, they didn’t stop there. Oh no, China’s also announced that it’s kicking off three days of “combat readiness patrols” and “Joint Sword” exercises all around Taiwan. According to them, these drills are “a serious warning” to Taiwan and “external forces” that they are not to be trifled with. But, I mean, was there any doubt that they had their cranky pants on?

In response to all this aerial chest-beating, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry called China’s bluff. According to the ministry, the real reason China’s up in arms (or rather, up in the skies) is because they’re peeved about Tsai’s visit to the United States. In their words, China’s military muscle-flexing “has seriously damaged regional peace, stability and security.” Well, it’s definitely made for a tense situation, that’s for sure.

Meanwhile, Chinese state television is broadcasting footage of their warships and missile launchers accompanied by dramatic martial music (cue evil villain soundtrack), which could be the biggest power move of all. As of now, they haven’t shown any actual missiles being fired, so we’re guessing that’s their way of saying, “We’re super mad, but not mad enough to actually start a war… yet.”

And hey, remember that US may send troops to Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion? I bet China’s really loving that bit of news. House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Rep. Michael McCaul recently acknowledged that sending American troops to Taiwan “would certainly be on the table.” Guess we’ll have to wait and see if that has any effect on China’s posturing. I’ll just be over here enjoying the drama from a safe distance, thank you very much!
