Heavyweight Bout Canceled Due to Medical Issue: UFC 287 Takes an Unexpected Turn

UFC 287 had quite the unexpected turn of events just minutes before the preliminary card kicked off Saturday at the Kaseya Center in Miami. The heavyweight bout between Chase Sherman and Karl Williams was canceled due to an undisclosed medical issue with Sherman, as announced by UFC lead commentator Jon Anik. The show must go on, right?

Despite the abrupt cancellation, a source told MMA Junkie that Williams was still compensated for his almost-fight. Williams (8-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) had initially stepped in on short notice to replace fan-favorite Chris Barnett, who withdrew from a matchup against Sherman for undisclosed reasons. With a unanimous decision victory over Lukasz Brzeski in his UFC debut on March 11, Williams was ready to rumble.

On the other hand, had he competed, Sherman (16-11 MMA, 4-10 UFC) would’ve sought redemption after losing to Waldo Cortes-Acosta in November, which was his fifth defeat in his most recent six fights.

With this cancellation, the UFC 287 lineup has been updated as follows:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET)
Champ Alex Pereira vs. Israel Adesanya – for middleweight title
